Stuart Munnich, Export Sales Manager at Thales UK, shared insights into the company’s Panoramic Above Armour Gimbal (PAAG) system in an interview with Defensehere.com, highlighting its role in enhancing surveillance and targeting capabilities for armored vehicle crews. Designed for integration across a range of land platforms, the PAAG delivers 360-degree situational awareness and precision engagement through a stabilised, sensor-rich gimbal.

The system features a combination of mid- or long-wave thermal imaging, short-wave infrared sensing, multiple video cameras, a laser rangefinder, and a laser target designator. These components work together to enable all-weather, day-and-night threat detection and engagement. AI-assisted functions such as automatic tracking, object detection, and real-time image fusion further improve situational responsiveness and reduce operator workload.

Already deployed on platforms like the German Boxer, the PAAG supports missions such as joint fire support and reconnaissance. It can be mast-mounted to extend visual reach or installed directly as a commander’s sight. Its stabilisation enables effective use on the move, while its modular design allows users to customise the sensor suite or upgrade components as operational needs evolve.

Developed by Thales Optronics, the PAAG system reflects the increasing demand for compact, future-ready battlefield solutions. With its integrated targeting, observation, and coordination capabilities, it offers land forces a reliable and adaptable toolset for high-threat environments.
