KNDS unveils new Leclerc XLR Tank for first time at IDEX 2025

KNDS France has introduced the Leclerc XLR, the latest iteration of its renowned main battle tank (MBT), at IDEX 2025 in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

This marks the first time the upgraded Leclerc XLR has been showcased in the Middle East.

The Leclerc XLR represents a comprehensive modernization of the original Leclerc MBT, integrating cutting-edge technology to enhance firepower, protection, mobility, and battlefield connectivity.

As part of the French Army’s SCORPION modernization program, this upgrade positions the Leclerc XLR as a next-generation combat vehicle, making it an attractive option for Middle Eastern nations seeking to strengthen their armored forces.

One of the most significant advancements of the Leclerc XLR is its enhanced firepower. While retaining the powerful 120mm smoothbore gun of its predecessor, the tank now features the ability to fire next-generation programmable ammunition, improving its lethality against a variety of targets, including enemy armor, infantry, and fortified positions.

The integration of an advanced fire-control system ensures high accuracy and effectiveness at extended ranges, even when the tank is in motion. Additionally, the Leclerc XLR is equipped with a remotely operated 7.62mm machine gun mounted on the turret, offering increased protection for the crew against close-range threats.

The tank’s defensive capabilities have been significantly reinforced with modular armor packages that provide increased resistance against kinetic and explosive threats. An anti-RPG protection kit enhances survivability in urban combat environments, where ambushes pose a significant risk. Furthermore, the latest iteration of the Galix Close Defense Protection System has been integrated, deploying smoke screens and countermeasures to evade enemy targeting systems.

Powered by a 1,500-horsepower diesel engine, the Leclerc XLR delivers an exceptional power-to-weight ratio, enabling speeds of up to 72 km/h on roads. Its advanced hydropneumatic suspension system enhances maneuverability across diverse terrains, making it particularly well-suited for operations in desert and rugged environments common in the Middle East. However, what truly distinguishes the Leclerc XLR is its integration into the SCORPION network. This digitization initiative allows seamless communication and coordination with other battlefield assets. Equipped with the Thales tactical radio system and the Atos SCORPION Information and Command System (SICS), the tank enables commanders to share real-time battlefield intelligence, improving operational effectiveness. The incorporation of advanced night vision and thermal imaging technology further enhances situational awareness, allowing for effective operations in low-visibility conditions.

The debut of the Leclerc XLR at IDEX 2025 highlights KNDS France’s ambition to expand its footprint in the Middle Eastern defense market. Several countries in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, already operate Leclerc MBTs and may find the XLR’s advanced capabilities particularly appealing for future upgrades or procurement. The modernization package not only extends the operational lifespan of the Leclerc but also aligns it with the demands of 21st-century warfare, where digital integration and multi-domain operations are becoming increasingly crucial.

With a growing demand for advanced armored solutions in the Middle East, the unveiling of the Leclerc XLR at IDEX 2025 could lead to potential defense contracts and strategic collaborations. As Middle Eastern nations continue to evaluate their military capabilities in response to evolving security challenges, the Leclerc XLR stands out as a battle-proven platform offering superior firepower, mobility, and connectivity—essential attributes for modern armored warfare.

The presence of the Leclerc XLR at IDEX 2025 not only demonstrates France’s commitment to innovation in land defense systems but also provides regional military leaders with a firsthand opportunity to assess one of the world’s most advanced main battle tanks. With its enhanced features and adaptability to evolving battlefield conditions, the Leclerc XLR is poised to play a pivotal role in the future of armored warfare both in the Middle East and beyond.
