With this decision, Japan joins a growing global network of 14 countries that have chosen the T-6 Texan II, adding to a worldwide fleet of over 1,000 of these versatile trainer aircraft.
The Beechcraft T-6 Texan II, renowned for its reliability and advanced training capabilities, will replace the Fuji/Subaru T-7, which has served as the JASDF’s primary trainer aircraft for many years. The new ITS will enable the JASDF to provide its pilots with cutting-edge training solutions, enhancing operational readiness and preparing them to meet evolving challenges in the rapidly changing security environment of the 21st century. The finalization of the contract is expected to take place in 2025.
“We are proud to offer the Japan Air Self-Defense Force a proven and highly capable Integrated Training System that will support their long-term training needs,” said Travis Tyler, President and CEO of Textron Aviation Defense LLC. “This selection is a testament to the exceptional performance and capabilities of our T-6 Texan II, which has consistently demonstrated its ability to deliver high-quality training to air forces around the world.”
The T-6 Texan II ITS selected by the JASDF is a comprehensive training solution that includes not only the T-6 aircraft but also a full Ground-Based Training System, instructor pilot and aircraft maintainer training programs, as well as long-term logistical and sustainment support. Designed to provide high efficiency and low operational costs, the T-6 Texan II will enable the JASDF to quickly produce skilled pilots, ensuring operational success across various mission types.
The Beechcraft T-6 Texan II has been the world’s leading Integrated Training System for over 20 years, with an installed base that far exceeds that of any competitor. More than 1,000 aircraft have been delivered across 14 nations, and the global fleet has collectively surpassed 5 million flight hours. The T-6 Texan II’s proven track record, low operating costs, and versatile design made it the ideal choice for the JASDF, as it seeks to modernize its training program and strengthen its air defense capabilities.
In addition to its use by Japan, the T-6 Texan II is employed by numerous air forces, including the United States Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Army, and Coast Guard, as well as the Royal Air Force, Israeli Air Force, Hellenic Air Force, and several others. The system has been an integral part of NATO’s flight training programs, including the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Flight Training program in Canada and the Euro NATO Joint Jet Pilot Training Program (ENJJPT) in Texas, USA.
The Beechcraft T-6 Texan II is widely regarded as the premier military flight trainer, combining over 90 years of Textron Aviation’s expertise in aviation technology with the affordability, operational efficiency, and global reach that air forces need to build their aircrew capabilities. The T-6 Texan II features an active production line and industry-leading Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) rating of 10, ensuring high production rates and continued availability of spare parts through its proven supply chain.
Textron Aviation Defense continues to be a trusted partner for military customers worldwide, delivering high-performance training and operational solutions. The addition of Japan to the T-6 Texan II’s global network of users underscores the system’s continued dominance in the military flight training sector and highlights its role in enhancing defense capabilities across the globe.
