Israel confirmed it carried out an air strike in Doha targeting senior Hamas leadership, saying the operation was conducted in coordination with the Shin Bet security agency. Israeli officials stated that 10 fighter jets took part in the strike and emphasized that “all responsibility lies with Israel.”
The strike hit a residential neighborhood close to apartment buildings. Al Jazeera correspondent Suhaib al-Assa reported that security forces in Doha were working to secure the area and assess casualties, describing the location as “extremely sensitive.”
Hamas sources said the targeted delegation survived the attack. According to the same sources, the meeting was convened to discuss a recent US ceasefire proposal for Gaza. Observers noted that the strike coincided with Israel’s continued evacuation orders in Gaza and efforts to seize Gaza City, interpreting it as an attempt to derail negotiations.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry condemned the strike as a “cowardly” attack, stressing that residential buildings housing members of Hamas’s political bureau were hit. Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said, “This criminal attack constitutes a flagrant violation of all international laws and norms and a serious threat to the security and safety of Qataris and residents of Qatar.” He added that investigations are underway at the highest level.
The United Nations also condemned the strike. UN Chief described it as a “flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar,” urging restraint and warning of wider regional repercussions.
The assault followed threats by Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir to assassinate Hamas leaders abroad and came just hours after Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Israel had accepted a US-backed ceasefire proposal.
