The DSEI UK defence exhibition opened today at London’s ExCeL Centre, running from 9 to 12 September. Defence vehicle manufacturer IVECO DEFENCE VEHICLES (IDV) is presenting its latest platforms, including crewed and uncrewed systems, while also showcasing autonomous technologies developed in the UK for future uncrewed ground vehicles (UGVs).
At Stand 130 in Hall S6, IDV will display three main vehicles: the Military Utility Vehicle (MUV), the Medium Tactical Vehicle (MTV), and the VIKING 6×6 UGV. In addition, the company will highlight its Modular Military Range of heavy-duty trucks.
Military Utility Vehicle (MUV)
The MUV is a 4×4 light truck family engineered for multiple logistics roles, able to carry payloads up to 4 tonnes. With its modular architecture, the platform can be configured for tasks such as cargo transport, troop movement, or ambulance duties.
Medium Tactical Vehicle (MTV)
The MTV is a multirole wheeled platform, already in service with NATO forces. It is designed with a high degree of modularity and interoperability, aligning with the UK Ministry of Defence’s requirement for a Medium Protected Vehicle. At DSEI, visitors can view the Hardtop variant. The MTV is positioned for potential use under the British Army’s Land Mobility Programme.
VIKING 6×6 UGV
VIKING is an uncrewed multirole platform with a hybrid electric powertrain and independent suspension. It is designed to carry heavier payloads at higher speeds across complex terrain, with a payload area that can be reconfigured for missions such as resupply, casualty evacuation, surveillance, or CBRN detection.
The vehicle integrates IDV’s Modular Autonomous Control Equipment (MACE), a proprietary autonomy suite capable of retrofit or integration into new platforms. VIKING features a 50kW/tonne power-to-weight ratio, an electric-only range of up to 30 km, and a payload capacity of 750 kg. Its low acoustic and thermal signature when operating on electric power increases survivability in contested environments.
IDV’s heavy-duty truck range, available in 4×4 to 10×10 configurations, is designed for logistics and tactical roles. Equipped with six-cylinder bi-fuel engines rated between 350 and 700 hp, these vehicles are built for tasks such as prime mover missions, including the transport of main battle tanks. They feature ballistic, mine, and IED protection. The range is widely used by European NATO forces.
IDV emphasises its long-term investment in UK-based research and development for Robotics and Autonomous Systems. Its MACE autonomy stack, incorporating the ATLAS AI-based navigation system, has been tested in recent exercises such as Alpine Star in Italy and the AUKUS TORVICE trials in the UK, USA, and Australia. ATLAS enables GNSS-denied navigation using terrain perception, object recognition, and neural networks.
