The Finnish Defence Forces has signed a contract with ICEYE for the acquisition of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellites, strengthening its space-based intelligence and surveillance capabilities.

The agreement, signed in Tampere by Brigadier General Engineering Juha-Matti Ylitalo, Deputy Director of the Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command, and Seppo Aaltonen, VP Nordics & NATO at ICEYE, follows a Letter of Intent concluded with the Finnish Ministry of Defence in June.

Under the contract, the Finnish Defence Forces will obtain ICEYE’s SAR satellites along with supporting technical systems and equipment, enabling sovereign surveillance capacity from space. SAR technology allows for high-resolution imagery regardless of weather or lighting conditions, a capability seen as essential for continuous situational awareness.

“This agreement is a testament to the trust and shared vision between ICEYE and the Finnish Defence Forces. It marks a pivotal moment, transitioning from intent to a tangible commitment that will equip Finland with a sovereign, space-based intelligence capability. We are proud to provide the technology that will not only secure Finland's position as a leader in this critical domain but also form the foundation for a long-term partnership that will enhance the collective security of its allies.”

The acquisition is valued at approximately €158 million. The figure covers the main procurement and includes options for lifecycle extensions and system expansion.

ICEYE currently operates the world’s largest SAR satellite constellation, with 54 satellites launched to date. The company states that its satellites can deliver ground resolution of 25 centimeters, enabling detailed monitoring and detection capabilities across the globe.
