FOSSA Systems develops nanosatellite solutions for civil and defense use (Interview)

Founded in 2020, Spanish company FOSSA Systems specializes in satellite-based connectivity solutions for remote and inaccessible areas. Headquartered in Spain, the company designs and manufactures nanosatellites weighing under 10 kilograms to deliver low-cost IoT and signals intelligence services. With 20 satellites launched to date, FOSSA holds the record for the most nanosatellites launched by a Spanish company, including missions for both commercial and defense clients.

In an interview with Defensehere.com, FOSSA Systems CEO Julián Fernández outlined the company’s approach to providing affordable and sovereign connectivity. He explained how FOSSA operates as a vertically integrated space provider, offering its own satellite platforms, IoT devices, and ground infrastructure to serve both civilian and governmental users.

Fernández noted that FOSSA satellites are equipped with software-defined radios capable of delivering both IoT connectivity and signals intelligence (SIGINT), including geolocation and identification of non-cooperative emitters. He emphasized the cost-efficiency and agility of the company’s nanosatellite missions, which can be planned and launched within six months at a cost of approximately $500,000 per satellite.

He added that FOSSA’s technology is already in operational use across various sectors including agriculture, logistics, oil & gas, as well as in defense and national security. The company has supplied sovereign communication capabilities to European defense ministries and public safety agencies, enabling encrypted messaging and situational awareness in areas lacking traditional coverage.
