China commissions first next-generation type 054B frigate “Luohe”

The Chinese Navy has officially commissioned its first Type 054B frigate, marking a significant step in the modernization of its naval fleet. The ceremony, held in Qingdao, Shandong Province, welcomed the newly named “Luohe” (hull number 545) into service with the Northern Theater Navy, also known as the North Sea Fleet.

Developed to replace the aging Type 054A class, the Type 054B introduces enhanced combat capabilities and advanced technologies. Displacing approximately 5,000 tons, the frigate features improvements in command and control systems, stealth technology, and integrated weapon systems. The vessel’s design also accommodates the larger Z-20 helicopter, replacing the older Z-9 model used by its predecessor.

Key upgrades include a dual-face rotating AESA radar on the main mast and an additional X-band radar on the secondary mast. The ship also features a new 100mm main gun, expanded flight deck, and a modernized vertical launch system (VLS) for medium-range HQ-16 missiles. These advancements enhance the frigate’s operational flexibility and engagement range.

The first hull was launched in August 2023 by Hudong shipyard in Shanghai, with sea trials beginning in January 2024. A second Type 054B frigate, with hull number 555, is expected to join the Southern Theater Navy (South Sea Fleet) soon.

The commissioning of “Luohe” reflects China’s efforts to maintain a robust naval presence in the region. While the Type 054B is poised to succeed the prolific Type 054A class, production of improved Type 054A variants (known as Type 054AG) continues. These ships, featuring similar technological upgrades, serve as a transitional design while the Type 054B undergoes further testing and evaluation.

With a longer hull (150 meters) and wider beam (17 meters) than its predecessor, the Type 054B provides ample space for advanced systems and equipment. Although the frigate retains the CODAD propulsion system of the Type 054A, it likely uses more powerful engines to manage the increased displacement.

As China strengthens its naval capabilities, the Type 054B is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing fleet versatility and ensuring maritime security in the years ahead.
