Thales’s eSIM technology powers SHIFT’s next-gen smartphones

Thales’s eSIM technology into its next-generation modular smartphones. This collaboration enables SHIFT smartphones to support eSIM functionality through an innovative solution that bridges traditional SIM cards with embedded SIM (eSIM) capabilities. Unlike conventional eSIMs that are soldered into devices, Thales’s pluggable eSIM format allows users to insert an eSIM into a standard SIM slot, enabling greater flexibility and enhanced connectivity.

Eco-Friendly eSIM with 100% Recycled Materials

To align with SHIFT’s sustainability commitment, the eSIM solution will be delivered in the Thales EcoSIM format, made entirely from recycled plastic sourced from discarded refrigerators. This approach reduces environmental impact and supports a circular economy, reinforcing SHIFT’s mission of ethical and eco-conscious smartphone production.

SHIFT’s modular smartphones are known for their repairability and long-lasting design, and this new feature further enhances their sustainability by reducing the need for multiple physical SIM cards and minimizing plastic waste.

Enhanced Flexibility for Users

With Thales’s advanced eSIM technology, SHIFT users will now be able to store and switch between up to 10 different connectivity plans. This provides significant advantages for individuals managing multiple lines, including:

Prepaid and postpaid plans

Corporate SIMs

Travel and roaming packages

By adopting Thales’s programmable EcoSIM technology, SHIFT is not only bringing next-generation mobile connectivity to its devices but also testing demand for eSIM-enabled smartphones in the sustainable technology market.

Carsten Waldeck, CEO and founder of SHIFT, highlighted the significance of the partnership:

"At SHIFT, we believe that sustainability and innovation go hand in hand. Through our partnership with Thales, we empower our customers to experience cutting-edge connectivity while staying true to our modular design philosophy and commitment to eco-conscious practices. This solution offers the flexibility of an eSIM, reducing the need for multiple physical cards, cutting down on plastic waste, and supporting more eco-friendly devices."

Eva Rudin, VP Mobile Connectivity Solutions at Thales, emphasized the potential of the collaboration:

"We are proud to support SHIFT in transforming their smartphones with our programmable EcoSIM technology. This collaboration demonstrates how advanced connectivity solutions can align seamlessly with responsible goals. It positions SHIFT as a new player in the growing eSIM market, allowing them to test demand for eSIM-enabled smartphones while maintaining their sustainable ethos."

A New Standard for Mobile Technology

With this strategic alliance, SHIFT and Thales are setting a new standard for sustainable mobile technology, merging advanced eSIM connectivity with modular and repairable smartphone designs. By integrating Thales’s expertise in secure digital connectivity, SHIFT is further solidifying its role as a leader in ethical and sustainable tech innovation.
