Teledyne FLIR Defense, a division of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, announced an order from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) for 15 Griffin G510x portable chemical detectors. The systems will assist CBP in detecting and identifying narcotics and explosives, including fentanyl and nitazenes, within five minutes.

The Griffin G510x units will be deployed under CBP’s Laboratory and Scientific Services program to identify drug samples that often contain trace amounts of fentanyl mixed with other substances. Deliveries are scheduled for completion this month.

According to U.S. government data, over 100,000 Americans died from drug overdoses in the past year, with most cases involving opioids. The Griffin G510x can detect minimal concentrations of these substances, even when combined with other compounds.

“Drugs like fentanyl remain a deadly threat and drain on our country, consuming lives and resources across America,” said Dr. JihFen Lei, President of Teledyne FLIR Defense. “We are proud to support U.S. Customs and Border Protection in their efforts to control drug trafficking by providing the G510x – a powerful tool that can quickly identify narcotics in the field, enhance investigations, and help law enforcement get these dangers off our streets.”

The Griffin G510x is a portable Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS) capable of identifying thousands of compounds outside of laboratory environments. It includes an on-board SWGDrug database containing over 3,500 illicit drugs and related compounds, which is updated regularly to include emerging substances.

The devices are designed and built at Teledyne FLIR Defense’s facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, and are already in use by law enforcement and public safety teams worldwide.
