Sweden Orders 44 Leopard 2A8 Tanks from KNDS

KNDS Deutschland, the German producer of Leopard 2A8 tanks, in a move to bolster its military capabilities. The deal, worth approximately €1.7 billion (20 billion SEK), includes the purchase of 44 new Leopard 2A8 tanks and the upgrade of 66 existing Stridsvagn 122 tanks. The new tanks will be designated Stridsvagn 123B, while the modernised Stridsvagn 122 will be renamed Stridsvagn 123A.

This move is part of Sweden's broader defence investment and aims to enhance its alignment with NATO allies, particularly Germany and Norway, which are also modernising their armoured forces. FMV Director-General Göran Mårtensson stressed that the upgrades are designed to improve interoperability with NATO forces, reducing Sweden's reliance on bespoke solutions.

The Stridsvagn 122, a key component of Sweden's armoured fleet since the 1990s, will undergo substantial modernisation. The new and upgraded Stridsvagn 123 tanks, although similar in appearance to their predecessors, will feature advanced technology to meet the demands of modern and future warfare. These upgrades will ensure continued reliability and efficiency while simplifying logistical requirements and reducing lifecycle costs.

“The Stridsvagn 123A and 123B models will be among the most advanced tanks in the world,” said Mårtensson. Notable upgrades include a new weapon system, improved digital systems, enhanced sights, and increased crew protection. The new tanks will also feature longer barrels for increased firepower, programmable ammunition, and reinforced armour. A new track system will accommodate the added weight of these upgraded vehicles.

The delivery of the Stridsvagn 123A is planned for 2027–2030, while the Stridsvagn 123B tanks are expected to be delivered from 2028 to 2031. This contract also represents Sweden’s response to the growing security threats in Europe and the replacement of military equipment previously sent to Ukraine, including tanks and combat vehicles.

In addition to this major acquisition, Sweden has allocated over €2 billion (22 billion SEK) to modernise its military, focusing on tanks and armoured vehicles. The Stridsfordon 90 fleet will also undergo upgrades, with the project slated for completion by 2030 at an estimated cost of over €430 million (5 billion SEK).

Sweden’s Defence Minister, Pål Jonson, underscored the strategic importance of this investment, calling it the country’s most significant military upgrade since the 1950s. The modernisation will equip Sweden’s mechanised brigades and Gotland battlegroup with state-of-the-art technology, enhancing its ability to face emerging security challenges.

“This monumental investment secures Sweden’s ability to confront future threats,” Jonson said, emphasizing that it represents a cornerstone of Sweden’s largest military build-up in decades.
