SIG SAUER has reached an annual production capacity of 100 million rounds of 6.8mm ammunition at its Jacksonville, Arkansas facility, marking a key milestone in its role as a supplier for the U.S. Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) Program.
The company stated that the increase in output is part of a broader strategy to expand its ammunition production infrastructure, with plans to double capacity in the coming years. The 6.8mm rounds are intended to be used alongside the Army’s newly adopted M7 and M250 rifles, offering an alternative to the long-serving 5.56mm and 7.62mm calibers.
The Jacksonville complex, which now includes six facilities spread over 100 acres, has received over $225 million in investments since 2017. The newest addition—a 210,000 square foot manufacturing facility—focuses on high-volume precision production of the 6.8mm round. According to SIG SAUER, the site employs more than 675 people and contributes an estimated $300 million annually to the Arkansas economy.
The facility utilizes automated systems and advanced manufacturing techniques to support both the new 6.8mm caliber and existing product lines, including 5.56mm, 7.62mm, and various pistol calibers. SIG SAUER emphasized that this diversification allows the company to maintain output for traditional ammunition types while scaling up its newer offerings.
“This is a proud moment for our team in Arkansas,” said Sean McGee, Vice President of Ammunition Operations. “We are building a future-oriented industrial base for small arms munitions that meets the evolving needs of the U.S. military.”
Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders welcomed the announcement, highlighting the company’s economic contribution to the state and reaffirming its strategic role in national defense manufacturing.
