Saab UK launches new manufacturing facility in Hampshire

Saab UK has officially opened its new advanced manufacturing facility in Fareham, Hampshire, marking a significant development in the company’s operations within the United Kingdom. The inauguration ceremony, held on 4 February 2025, was attended by the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, Rt Hon Jonathan Reynolds MP.

The newly established three-building campus focuses on the development, production, and support of Saab's radar systems and Seaeye underwater robotics portfolio. The facility will manufacture the 3D multi-mission radar Giraffe 1X and the all-electric subsea remotely operated vehicle (ROV), Seaeye SR20.

This opening concludes the investment commitment announced by Saab in 2023. The site is designed to support up to 400 jobs, offering local apprenticeship opportunities and contributing to the UK’s sovereign capabilities in radar and underwater robotics manufacturing. It will serve both domestic and international markets, with the potential for future expansion.

Saab's new campus is positioned as a centre of excellence, enhancing the support provided to the UK Ministry of Defence. The facility will address current and future customer requirements for radar systems and maintain in-service radars used by the UK Armed Forces, including Giraffe 1X, Giraffe AMB air defence radars, and TAIPAN (Arthur) artillery locating radars.

Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, highlighted the company's ongoing commitment to the UK defence sector, stating that the investment will enable the delivery of innovative technologies to meet customer needs.

Rt Hon Jonathan Reynolds MP emphasized the importance of Saab's investment in the context of the UK's broader economic growth strategy, noting the creation of high-skilled jobs and the strengthening of the defence sector.

Rt Hon John Healey MP, Secretary of State for Defence, underlined the role of the new facility in supporting the UK's defence capabilities, fostering innovation, and providing valuable apprenticeship opportunities to develop the next generation of defence technology professionals.
