Poland takes delivery of new Abrams tank shipment

Poland has received another shipment of U.S.made armored vehicles, the Ministry of Defence confirmed on Friday.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that the delivery included 38 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams main battle tanks and 14 M88A2 HERCULES recovery vehicles, totaling 52 units.

The minister noted that the composition of the shipment differed slightly from earlier reports. With this delivery, Poland now fields 85 M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams tanks and 116 older M1A1FEPs, making 201 Abrams tanks in service overall. The country also operates 26 M88A2 recovery vehicles.

The new equipment will allow the Polish Army to fully rearm the 2nd Tank Battalion of the 1st Armored Brigade with the latest Abrams variant. Plans are also in place to begin equipping another battalion, either within the 19th Mechanized Brigade or the 1st Armored Brigade, which still operate older M1A1FEP models.

Poland is awaiting further deliveries of M1110 Joint Assault Bridges and M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicles, with the latter expected around 2029. Spare parts production for the Abrams is already taking place within the Polish defense industry under agreements that expand cooperation with the United States.

In a statement on social media, Kosiniak-Kamysz wrote:

“Another shipment of equipment for our armored forces has arrived in Poland. We have received one of the largest sea transports, including 38 M1A2 Abrams tanks and 14 recovery vehicles. The new equipment will soon reach our units.”
