Navantia and Leonardo have formalized a new phase in their long-standing partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at expanding joint efforts in naval defense solutions. The agreement was announced during the FEINDEF 2025 exhibition, taking place in Madrid from May 12 to 14.
Signed last week by Navantia COO Gonzalo Mateo and Leonardo Electronics’ Director of Marketing and Sales Davide Fazio, the MoU sets the groundwork for exploring new commercial opportunities. The collaboration seeks to broaden both companies’ offerings by aligning shipbuilding expertise with advanced sensor and weapon systems.
Navantia’s naval platforms—ranging from patrol vessels and corvettes to frigates and aircraft carriers—are already equipped with various Leonardo systems. These include the OTO 127/64 LW naval gun, fire control radars integrated into Navantia’s combat systems, and the Automatic Ammunition Handling System (AAHS), among others.
The partnership has already seen integration of Leonardo technologies into Spain’s F110 frigates and the BAM offshore patrol vessels, which utilize the OTO 76/62 mm gun system and associated fire control radar. Leonardo’s equipment is also featured on Navantia-built ships operated by foreign navies.
According to both companies, the agreement is expected to streamline future joint efforts and improve responsiveness to evolving defense requirements, particularly in competitive international markets. The MoU aims to facilitate more agile commercial and strategic decision-making between the two firms.
