Nammo and BAE Systems sign munitions agreement

Nammo and BAE Systems have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore deeper cooperation on munitions and energetics, including a potential rocket motor production initiative in Norway. The agreement was formalized at the British Embassy in Oslo in the presence of the UK Ambassador to Norway, Jan Thompson.

The MoU covers a range of ammunition calibres, from 30mm to 155mm, and aims to expand ongoing collaboration between the two companies. Previous joint efforts have included munitions supply and improvements in explosive and propellant production at Nammo’s facilities in Raufoss.

The agreement may also support broader defense cooperation between Norway and the United Kingdom, particularly in the context of Norway’s future frigate procurement. The UK is among the candidates proposing a platform for the programme, offering the Type 26 frigate developed by BAE Systems in Glasgow. The proposal includes the Mk45 five-inch naval gun.

If selected, the UK offer could pave the way for further industrial cooperation. Nammo and BAE Systems plan to work with the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) to assess the feasibility of establishing a new rocket motor production line in Norway. The companies will also study the potential for localized manufacturing of five-inch ammunition for use by both the Norwegian and British navies, as well as for export.

The MoU reflects continued efforts by both firms to align defense industrial capabilities between Norway and the UK, with a focus on supply chain resilience and production capacity expansion.
