Latvia to boost artillery capabilities with Swedish Archer Systems

Latvia has signed a letter of intent with Sweden for the purchase of 18 Archer 8x8 self-propelled artillery systems, with deliveries expected to begin in 2026. The agreement was formalized on June 10 and marks a new step in the defense cooperation between the two countries.

The document outlines a mutual commitment to conclude a future intergovernmental agreement. It also includes plans to involve the Latvian defense industry in the supply chain, potentially contributing to the systems’ production and support.

Sweden’s National Armaments Director Göran Mårtensson and Latvia’s Deputy State Secretary for Procurement Major General Andis Dilāns signed the letter in Riga. Latvia’s Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds described the deal as a move to reinforce regional security and deterrence amid growing geopolitical tensions.

In parallel with the planned deliveries, the Swedish Armed Forces will lease systems to Latvia to ensure operational continuity until the new units arrive.

The agreement also includes a pledge to explore the development of a joint 6x6 wheeled artillery unit and initiate shared training programs for Latvian and Swedish military personnel.

Earlier this year, BAE Systems Bofors signed a framework agreement with Latvia for the Archer system. Additional contracts have since been signed with Swedish defense IT provider MilDef for ruggedized hardware, including computers, displays, and network equipment valued at SEK 52 million, with deliveries set for 2025.
