GA-ASI’s Cooperberg wins 'outstanding engineer award' for MQ-9B SeaGuardian

MQ-9B SeaGuardian, has been awarded the Outstanding Engineer Award by the San Diego County Engineering Council (SDCEC). The honor was presented by SDCEC President Debra Kimberling during a ceremony held on February 18.

Cooperberg has played a pivotal role in the integration and testing of the MQ-9B product line. Under his leadership, the first SeaGuardian—recognized as the world’s most advanced medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft—was successfully designed and deployed. His oversight of a multidisciplinary engineering team has driven innovation in unmanned aviation, particularly in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

Derived from GA-ASI’s MQ-9B SkyGuardian, the SeaGuardian integrates state-of-the-art payloads, including advanced maritime ISR, Signals Intelligence (SIGINT), Communications Intelligence (COMINT), and sonobuoy monitoring and control. These capabilities are managed through a sophisticated combination of a Certifiable Ground Control Station (CGCS) and a mission operator station, ensuring seamless data accessibility for operators.

“Through Adam’s leadership, these capabilities have been demonstrated with fielded customers and over 25 partner nations during various Department of Defense-sponsored exercises,” said GA-ASI President David R. Alexander. “His work has pioneered advancements in Manned-Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T), Unmanned-Unmanned Teaming, collaborative Anti-Submarine Warfare, and long-range targeting—achievements that are shaping the future of unmanned aviation.”

Notable milestones from 2024 include the self-deployment of the SeaGuardian across the Pacific, operating between Hawaii and Southern California as part of a multinational military exercise. Cooperberg’s contributions have also facilitated hundreds of flight hours in testing and international customer operations.

His expertise and leadership have contributed to the increasing global adoption of the MQ-9B SeaGuardian. The platform’s modular design allows for rapid production and deployment, driving significant domestic and international interest.

The SDCEC, a nonprofit organization, serves as a catalyst for collaboration among engineering societies and educational institutions in San Diego, recognizing excellence and promoting engineering outreach initiatives.
