From air defense to mortars: The modular capabilities of Pandur II 8x8

The Pandur II 8x8 is a well-established armoured wheeled platform forming a key part of the Czech Army’s ground forces and serving with several international operators. Developed and produced by CSG Group's Tatra Defence Vehicle (TDV) under licence from General Dynamics European Land Systems, the vehicle is recognised for its modular design, allowing multiple mission configurations and straightforward modernisation.

In an interview with defensehere.com, CSG Group spokesperson Andrej Čírtek discussed two upgraded variants of the Pandur II 8x8 recently configured to demonstrate the platform’s adaptability. One variant integrates an air defence system featuring a 30 mm Bushmaster cannon optimised for counter-drone roles, supported by anti-aircraft missiles. The other incorporates the 120mm Crossbow mortar turret, capable of reloading in any tube position and delivering precise fire while on the move.

The vehicle’s welded self-supporting hull offers ballistic and mine protection up to STANAG 4569 Level 4, along with CBRN protection systems. Power is provided by a Cummins ISLe diesel engine coupled with a ZF automatic transmission, enabling a maximum speed of 105 km/h and a range of up to 700 km. The Pandur II 8x8 is also transportable by standard NATO transport aircraft such as the C-130, A400M, C-5, and C-390.

With its modular architecture, the Pandur II 8x8 can be configured for roles including infantry fighting vehicle, armoured personnel carrier, fire support vehicle, command post, ambulance, reconnaissance vehicle, and self-propelled mortar. This approach enables users to modernise existing fleets without replacing the entire platform, extending operational life and enhancing capability.

TDV remains the exclusive manufacturer and service provider for Pandur II 8x8 vehicles in the Czech Army and selected territories worldwide. The full interview with Andrej Čírtek, featuring details on the upgraded configurations, can be viewed below:
