The latest order builds on the existing Serval platform, enhancing its combat capabilities for high-intensity conflicts. In addition to the 530 Serval Appui SCORPION units, the contract also includes an additional 97 standard Serval vehicles, further reinforcing France’s SCORPION modernisation programme.
€1 Billion Investment in France’s Defence Industry
The procurement, valued at over €1 billion, supports a network of key defence companies, including KNDS France, TEXELIS, MBDA, and CS GROUP. These firms will be responsible for various aspects of production, ensuring domestic industrial support and technological advancements across multiple locations in France.The initiative falls under the Multipurpose Light Tactical Vehicle (VLTP) programme and is aligned with the 2024-2030 Military Programming Law (LPM). It also contributes to France’s evolving defence strategy, particularly in the fields of Surface Air Low Layer Defence and Anti-Drone Warfare, by integrating advanced battlefield technologies.
The Serval Appui SCORPION is designed to improve mobility, protection, and operational autonomy for French ground forces. Its modular structure allows for the integration of high-performance systems, ensuring adaptability to evolving threats and mission requirements.
Among the specialised variants of the Serval Appui SCORPION:
Ground-to-Air Defence Version: Equipped with Mistral 3 missile-firing turrets, enhancing short-range air defence capabilities.
Anti-Drone Warfare Version: Integrated with a radar system, radio frequency detection, a fire control system, and a 30×113 mm cannon, providing counter-drone capabilities.
Tactical Communication Node Variant: Incorporates the SYRACUSE IV satellite system and advanced radio communication technologies, strengthening battlefield connectivity and coordination.
Third Phase of the VLTP Programme
This order marks the third stage of the VLTP programme, following the delivery of 4,380 VT4 vehicles in Stage 1 and the procurement of 103 unprotected medical vehicles in Stage 2. The acquisition of the Serval Appui SCORPION underscores France’s commitment to equipping its armed forces with modern, adaptable, and combat-ready armoured vehicles.
