ULAK and TÜRKSAT sign agreement for 5G smart transportation network

ULAK Haberleşme A.Ş. and Türksat have signed an agreement to establish a 5G private network infrastructure for Cooperative and Smart Transportation Systems (K-AUS).

The signing ceremony took place at MWC 2025 in Barcelona, one of the world’s largest mobile technology events, with the participation of Türkiye’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu.

The agreement was signed by Türksat General Manager Ahmet Hamdi Atalay and ULAK Haberleşme General Manager Ruşen Kömürcü. The project will cover the deployment of a 5G-supported smart transportation infrastructure along a 40-kilometer corridor between Istanbul’s Hasdal Junction and Istanbul Airport, with 19 designated sites.

5G Era in Smart Transportation Begins

The initiative aims to integrate smart transportation systems with 5G technology. The 5G private network, set to be deployed at 19 locations, will operate with locally developed components, including Base Stations (gNodeB – RAN), Core Network, and the Network Management and Monitoring System (NMS), ensuring end-to-end service.

This infrastructure will enhance vehicle and transportation communication capabilities, enabling Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I), and Vehicle-to-Network (V2N) connectivity. The system will facilitate high-speed, low-latency, and secure data communication, improving road safety and efficiency.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, ULAK Haberleşme General Manager Dr. R. Ruşen Kömürcü emphasized Türkiye’s leadership in national communication solutions, stating:

“This project marks a significant milestone in Türkiye’s smart transportation ecosystem. With our 5G private network solutions, we aim to make smart transportation systems safer, faster, and more efficient. Through this collaboration with Türksat, we are pioneering the first 5G-supported Cooperative Smart Transportation Systems along one of Istanbul’s critical transport corridors, shaping the future of urban mobility.”

Türksat General Manager Ahmet Hamdi Atalay also highlighted the strategic importance of the partnership, noting:

“With this project, we are taking another step forward in Türkiye’s mobile and communication technologies. By leveraging 5G capabilities, we aim to enhance the efficiency of smart transportation systems and strengthen Türkiye’s global competitiveness in this field. At Türksat, our top priority is contributing to Türkiye’s digital transformation with national technologies. This collaboration will allow us to implement 5G-enabled smart transportation systems in a crucial transit corridor of Istanbul, advancing our country’s transportation infrastructure.”
