Defence Minister Maria Eagle has officially opened the Submarine Availability Support Hub (SASH) in Bristol, a major new facility designed to enhance submarine availability, engineering capabilities, and workforce development. The hub is expected to create 100 new jobs and support apprenticeship programs, contributing to the UK’s continuous at-sea nuclear deterrent.
The facility is part of the UK government’s broader Defence Industrial Strategy, which aims to position the defence sector as a key driver of economic growth while strengthening national security. The SASH will bring together government agencies, industry partners, and technical experts to improve submarine maintenance and delivery. The hub will also facilitate closer cooperation between the Defence Nuclear Enterprise, Babcock, and other contractors, enabling faster decision-making and more efficient problem-solving through the use of cutting-edge digital and learning tools.
Strengthening the UK’s Submarine Capabilities
The opening of the facility supports the UK’s commitment to maintaining its nuclear deterrence posture. The SASH will play a crucial role in ensuring the availability of submarines for the Royal Navy, integrating efforts from the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA) and key industry players to improve maintenance operations at Clyde and Devonport.
The investment in the new hub follows the government’s launch of the Defence Industrial Strategy consultation, which aims to reinforce deterrence as a core pillar of national security while ensuring that the defence industry continues to drive job creation and innovation across the UK. The submarine enterprise already supports 42,000 jobs and a supply chain of over 3,000 businesses, with the new facility adding further momentum to these efforts.
Government and Industry Leaders Highlight Strategic Importance
At the opening ceremony, Maria Eagle, Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, emphasized the government’s commitment to both national security and economic growth:
“It was a privilege to open the new Babcock Submarine Availability Support Hub in Bristol and to engage with the talented engineers, civilian colleagues, and Navy personnel who will work here. The investment in this facility demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that defence is a driver of prosperity while safeguarding our national security.”
Sir Chris Gardner KBE, CEO of the Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), underlined the hub’s role in improving submarine fleet availability and workforce development:
“This new hub represents a significant step forward for the UK’s submarine capability. It will provide a dedicated space for the SDA and Babcock to collaborate more effectively, enhancing submarine readiness and supporting vital maintenance work. The facility will also serve as an important training ground for the next generation of engineers, offering placement opportunities for students pursuing careers in the defence sector.”
The SASH is expected to streamline planning and preparation for submarine maintenance while offering a collaborative environment for engineers, technicians, and industry experts. It will also support the government’s efforts to modernize defence infrastructure and integrate emerging technologies into naval operations.
