Paraguay will acquire Northrop Grumman’s AN/TPS-78 Advanced Capability (ADCAP) long-range air surveillance radar systems through the U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, marking the country’s first FMS partnership with the United States.
The acquisition is intended to expand Paraguay’s ability to monitor its national airspace by detecting and tracking both manned and unmanned aircraft.
Greg Teitelbaum, vice president for land and maritime sensors at Northrop Grumman, said:
“The Northrop Grumman AN/TPS-78 ADCAP radar provides the long-range coverage and precision tracking required by the Paraguayan Air Force to monitor and secure the country’s airspace. Northrop Grumman is committed to rapidly delivering this vital technology.”
The agreement was also discussed in a recent meeting between Paraguayan President Santiago Pena and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. According to the U.S. statement, the talks included the radar acquisition, potential economic benefits, and how the system could support Paraguay’s counter-narcotics and counter-weapons trafficking missions.
The AN/TPS-78 ADCAP operates in the S-band frequency to minimize interference and is designed to function effectively in complex environments. Its stacked beam architecture allows the system to detect targets at different altitudes in all weather conditions. The radar is transportable and built for reliability and low-cost logistics, reflecting Northrop Grumman’s decades of experience in radar technology.
