Brave Tern AS, a subsidiary of Fred. Olsen Windcarrier (FOWIC) has selected Navantia S.A., S.M.E. and the facilities of Navantia Shipreparis Ferrol Estuary to perform an upgrade and a crane replacement project on the vessel Brave Tern, a specialized jack-up vessel for transportation and installation of wind turbines to offshore wind farms.
The first phase of the project, which includes engineering, material procurement and prefabrication was finalised during 2023, and a second phase including the actual on-board installation work will be performed after the arrival of the vessel at the yard in January 2024.
The vessel is estimated to remain at yard for approximately 7 months, where the time will be split between work in drydock and alongside a repair berth involving the yard’s facilities of both Ferrol and Fene (A Coruña, Spain).
The project is of great importance to both FOWIC, upgrading the vessel to meet future demand for installation of larger wind turbines, and Navantia, proving its expertise to complete complex vessel upgrade projects and securing project work for many months for both own employees and auxiliary industries.
FOWIC will in addition to the upgrade and crane replacement be performing larger maintenance activities which also will include assistance from local suppliers and specialist contractors brought in from abroad, all having a positive impact in Ferrol and its surrounding area.
The project teams of FOWIC and Navantia have been working together for the past year and will continue their close cooperation to secure a successful execution of the project.
