Japan’s Aero Asahi to add Leonardo’s Agusta-branded VIP chopper to its fleet

Aero Asahi Corporation, a prominent general aviation service provider in Japan, is set to introduce the AW169 light intermediate twin engine helicopter from Italian manufacturer Leonardo into its fleet, configured specifically for Agusta brand.

This move marks Aero Asahi as the inaugural Japanese operator to incorporate a VIP Leonardo helicopter into its services under the Agusta brand. The company's decision is influenced by its familiarity with the AW169, having supported a dedicated demo tour held in Japan in 2023.

The AW169 boasts impressive performance, advanced flight and navigation capabilities facilitated by sophisticated avionics and mission systems. Its custom interior and Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) mode enhance comfort and sustainability, providing power to all main cabin and cockpit systems on the ground with rotors stopped.

The Agusta brand's reputation aligns seamlessly with these qualities, offering top-notch performance, comfort, and customization for VIP/corporate transport duties. Aero Asahi's AW169, slated for delivery in spring 2025, will feature specialized equipment including advanced soundproofing, VIP seating for up to eight passengers, a Smart Cabin Management System, and an entertainment system. Additionally, the contract includes the exclusive Agusta For You service and maintenance package.

Leonardo's introduction of the AW169 expands its presence in various markets, particularly in passenger transport, consolidating its position as a leader in the multi-engine VIP market. With over 900 helicopters delivered in the last decade and a significant market share, Leonardo offers operators a diverse range of options between the AW109 series and the popular AW139 models.

Currently, over 320 AW169s are on order, with approximately 170 already delivered to operators in more than 30 countries. These helicopters have collectively amassed over 170,000 flight hours across diverse operational contexts.

Japan, with approximately 160 helicopters in service for various missions including law enforcement, emergency medical service, search and rescue, fire-fighting, disaster relief, VIP/corporate transport, electronic news gathering, and maritime utility, remains a significant market for Leonardo and its helicopter range.
