HENSOLDT unveils new versatile infrared detection system

Munich-based European defense industry company HENSOLDT, a specialist in sensor technology, unveiled its latest advancement in reconnaissance and self-protection sensor systems with a new multifunctional infrared detection system.

This system, a press release on Thursday by the company said, was designed for various airborne platforms, and comprises a central computer and an imaging unit.

Utilizing two-color infrared technology, it enhances hazard detection capabilities with extended range and minimal false alarms.

Its imaging technology enables not only missile warning but also hotspot identification and broader reconnaissance functions, surpassing the capabilities of traditional missile warning systems. Operating passively, the system remains undetectable itself.

Tanya Altmann, Head of the Optronics & Land Solutions Division at HENSOLDT said with the new system, HENSOLDT is expanding its product portfolio in the infrared sector, noting: “This gives us the best possible sensor solution for our customers, also in combination with our other self-defence systems.”

“Due to its design and performance data, it also meets the high requirements for integration into fighter aircraft. With its long range and low weight, the sensor can also make a critical contribution to the detection of threats and the self-defence of the platform,” Altmann was quoted as saying by the company statement.

The system provides threat detection and localization, delivering full 360-degree protection through its six sensors.

Its infrared detection capability allows seamless integration across platforms, thanks to its optimized Size, Weight, and Performance (SWaP) and cross-sectional development. Standardized interfaces facilitate easy integration, and compatibility with countermeasures like chaff, flares, and DIRCM (Directed Infra-Red Counter Measure) enhances its effectiveness.

When integrated into HENSOLDT's established AMPS (Airborne Missile Protection System), it offers users an unparalleled solution for self-defense against both surface-to-air and air-to-air missiles.
