The 12th International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2024 began on Tuesday, November 19, at the Karachi Expo Centre, Pakistan. Organized biennially by the Defence Export Promotion Organisation (DEPO), the four-day event brings together over 350 high-level delegations from 55 countries, including the United States, China, Turkiye, and the United Kingdom, aiming to foster global defence collaborations. The exhibition is set to conclude on Friday, November 22.
This year, IDEAS features 560 exhibitors, with 333 international companies showcasing cutting-edge defence and military technologies. Turkiye leads participation with 75 companies and delegations, followed closely by China. Notably, Iran and Italy are making their debut at the event, highlighting the fair’s expanding international appeal. The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) and other entities are hosting a dedicated startups pavilion, focusing on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies.
Key Pakistani innovations on display include the Haider Main Battle Tank, developed in collaboration with China’s Norinco, the Shahpar III medium-altitude long-endurance drone, and upgraded models of the Al-Khalid tank and Super Mushshak trainer aircraft. A seminar titled “Pakistan Defence Production Potential — Challenges, Opportunities, and Way Forward” will also feature insights from global defence experts.
In his inaugural address, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif emphasized Pakistan’s growing prominence in the international defence market, citing the country’s advancements in quality and reliability. He underscored Pakistan’s commitment to global peace and stability, highlighting IDEAS as a platform for fostering partnerships and joint ventures.
Security measures have been heightened in Karachi, with a ban on public gatherings imposed under Section 144 until November 24 to ensure the safety of international participants. Roads near the Expo Centre have been partially closed, and schools in the vicinity have been temporarily shut.
