Fincantieri's Norwegian subsidiary VARD wins sustainable shipbuilding design award

Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri’s Norwegian subsidiary VARD along with, Hurtigruten and the partners in the Sea Zero research project won the Best Concept Ship Design at the prestigious Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards in Amsterdam, Fincantieri said on official social media accounts.

“Congratulations to #VARD, Hurtigruten and the partners in the #SeaZero research project for winning the Best Concept Ship Design at the prestigious Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards in Amsterdam,” it wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

The company noted that a ship design concept launched in the first revision one year ago, aiming to be the world's most energy efficient and environmentally friendly passenger cruise ship in operation.

The ship’s design concept features state-of-the-art solutions like contra-rotating propellers, air lubrication to reduce water resistance, retractable sails and large batteries. The goal is to build a ship that can sail without emissions during normal operation.

“Another great achievement by our subsidiary VARD, paving the way towards a more sustainable future,” it added.

Hurtigruten Norway, which is working towards its first zero emission ship by 2030, has last year kicked off an innovative research project in partnership with research institute SINTEF and 12 maritime partners.

The new consortium is dedicated to developing innovative, zero-emission solutions for the future of passenger ships. Based on cutting-edge research, the partners aim to create the most energy-efficient and sustainable cruise ship ever built by 2030.
