The Czech Republic has concluded a $1.6 billion contract to procure 44 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks from German manufacturer KNDS, with deliveries expected to begin in 2028.
According to Czech Defense Ministry officials, the order covers both command and combat versions of the Leopard 2A8. Deliveries will continue until 2031. The agreement also provides for logistical and service support.
In addition to the tanks, Prague intends to acquire 19 more Leopard systems in the future, including recovery, bridging, engineering, and training vehicles, through separate contracts.
KNDS confirmed that the deal was signed on behalf of the Czech Ministry of Defense by Germany’s Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). A parallel agreement was concluded for country-specific adaptations. The total value amounts to approximately €1.34 billion.
The Czech Republic becomes the third country to join the Leopard 2A8 joint procurement program with Germany. The A8 variant is expected to serve as the new standard across participating European armies.
The Leopard 2 is currently in service with 15 European nations, contributing to NATO’s efforts to increase interoperability and standardization of equipment among member states.
