Türkiye to acquire 44 Eurofighter Typhoon Jets

Türkiye has finalized an agreement with the United Kingdom for the purchase of 20 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, in what the UK government described as its largest fighter export deal in nearly two decades. The £8 billion agreement was signed in Ankara during Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s first official visit to Türkiye.

Following the announcement, Turkish Minister of National Defence Yaşar Güler stated that Türkiye will acquire a total of 44 Eurofighter aircraft — 20 from the United Kingdom, 12 from Qatar, and 12 from Oman. “This acquisition will significantly enhance the combat capability of the Turkish Air Force and further strengthen our cooperation with NATO allies,” Güler said.

The British government noted that the contract will sustain approximately 20,000 skilled jobs across the United Kingdom, with production and assembly taking place in Warton, Samlesbury, Bristol, and Edinburgh. Around 37 percent of each aircraft will be produced in the UK, with the remainder shared among the Eurofighter partner nations Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Defense Secretary John Healey, who accompanied Prime Minister Starmer to Ankara, said the agreement “goes far beyond the procurement of aircraft” and represents “the leading edge of a growing defence and industrial partnership between our two nations.”

Prime Minister Starmer emphasized the strategic dimension of the deal, saying it would “allow our Armed Forces to work even closer together as we deter threats and protect our national interests.”

BAE Systems Chief Executive Charles Woodburn described Türkiye’s decision to procure the Typhoon as “the start of a new chapter” in the defense cooperation between the two NATO allies.

The first deliveries to Türkiye are expected in 2030. The Typhoon fleet will join those already in service with several NATO members, contributing to air policing missions over Eastern Europe and supporting coalition operations in the Middle East.
