A contract for 20 new Eurofighter Tranche 5 aircraft for the German Air Force has been signed between NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) and Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug during a formal ceremony in Ulm, Germany. The aircraft will be equipped with the newly developed ECRS Mk1 (Eurofighter Common Radar System Mark 1), jointly developed by HENSOLDT and Indra.

The ECRS Mk1 represents the next-generation radar system for Eurofighter, designed for the German and Spanish Air Forces. The system is based on multi-channel Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology and features an advanced processor intended to improve performance across a range of missions.

According to Eurofighter, the radar’s architecture enhances air-to-air and high-resolution air-to-ground capabilities, while also integrating both passive and active electronic warfare functions. These improvements are expected to expand the aircraft’s operational effectiveness in modern combat scenarios.

In total, around 200 ECRS Mk1 units will be delivered to Germany and Spain, further aligning their air forces’ modernization programs with ongoing European defense initiatives.
