Germany has chosen Raytheon’s SPY-6(V)1 radar for integration on eight upcoming F127-class frigates, according to a U.S. Foreign Military Sales (FMS) request announced by the company on October 8. The selection marks Germany as the first international customer for the SPY-6 radar family.

Developed by Raytheon, an RTX business, SPY-6(V)1 is a four-face, fixed-array radar equipped with 37 radar modular assemblies per array, offering continuous 360-degree situational awareness. The system is part of the U.S. Navy’s SPY-6 radar family, which provides air and missile defense across seven different ship classes.

Barbara Borgonovi, president of Naval Power at Raytheon, said the decision reflects international confidence in the radar’s operational capabilities. “Integrating the radar on F127 frigates will provide the German Navy with a multi-mission solution that enables faster and more informed decision-making at sea,” she stated.

The contract also covers adaptation, integration support, and services tailored to the design of the F127 platform. Once operational, the radar is expected to enhance Germany’s air and missile defense capabilities within NATO’s maritime framework.

SPY-6 radars are produced at Raytheon’s Radar Development Facility in Andover, Massachusetts, which supports design, manufacturing, and testing of radar systems for U.S. and allied forces.
