The new aircraft are estimated to cost around 2.5 billion euros ($2.9 billion), according to documents prepared for the Bundestag’s budget committee. Another source familiar with the matter confirmed ongoing discussions regarding a possible order but did not specify the number of jets under consideration. The German Defence Ministry declined to comment on the reports.
Germany has already ordered 35 F-35s to replace its ageing Tornado fleet, which has served as the platform for carrying U.S. nuclear weapons stored in Germany under NATO arrangements. The F-35s are expected to assume this role once deliveries are completed.
In July, the government denied reports of plans to buy more aircraft, but the recently expanded defense budget has opened room for additional procurement programs. A military source told Reuters at the time that discussions over acquiring 15 extra jets had taken place earlier.
Any new order could further strain relations with France, as Berlin and Paris continue to face difficulties advancing their joint Future Combat Air System (FCAS/SCAF) project, intended as a European alternative to the F-35.
