GA-ASI showcases MQ-9B SeaGuardian at NASWI event

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) brought its MQ-9B SeaGuardian unmanned aircraft to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island (NASWI), Washington, for the station’s open house on August 23. The aircraft was presented in its anti-submarine warfare (ASW) configuration.

The open house featured both modern and historical naval aviation platforms. NASWI leadership requested the MQ-9B’s participation to give visitors and service members an opportunity to see the Group 5 unmanned aircraft, which has previously supported Navy exercises such as Northern Edge and Integrated Battle Problem 2023. While the SeaGuardian has been operated remotely from NASWI during those events, it had not landed at the base until this demonstration.

The aircraft flew from Palmdale, California, to Whidbey Island using its onboard Detect and Avoid system, allowing it to operate in national airspace under the same rules as piloted aircraft. During the event, GA-ASI highlighted the platform’s ASW payloads, autonomous takeoff and landing features, and maritime intelligence capabilities. Additional pylons were installed to demonstrate its ability to carry external payloads and weapons.

David R. Alexander, president of GA-ASI, said:

“I’m pleased to support the Navy’s continuing public engagement efforts with our MQ-9B and appreciate NAS Whidbey leadership’s ongoing support of SeaGuardian operations. I look forward to continuing to work together as we demonstrate the capability of this multi-faceted UAS and fill critical capability gaps.”

The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division’s AIRWorks team led the event, reflecting its role in supporting the development and integration of the SeaGuardian. AIRWorks has previously worked with GA-ASI during exercises including Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2024 and will serve as lead systems integrator for the Navy’s operational evaluation of the MQ-9B in 2026.

GA-ASI expects continued international interest in the platform, citing its cost relative to manned maritime aircraft and its deployment record in surveillance and ASW roles.
