Germany and France have signed an implementation agreement to advance the development of a satellite-based early warning system known as Odin’s Eye, designed to enhance Europe’s ability to detect missile launches.

The agreement was formalized on Wednesday during a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius and his French counterpart Catherine Vautrin signed the document, marking a new stage in bilateral defense cooperation.

“It remains crucial for our joint defense that we can detect and counter threats as swiftly as possible,” Pistorius said at the signing ceremony. “From space, we aim to spot hostile missiles the moment they are launched. Only then can we intercept them in time.”

The Odin’s Eye project seeks to strengthen Europe’s strategic autonomy in missile detection by using satellites to provide early warning data across allied networks. German space company OHB has been coordinating the system’s architecture and development efforts.

The initiative is part of a broader effort within NATO and the European Union to improve collective defense capabilities amid growing concerns over missile threats.
