{"id":148112,"date":"2025-03-12T16:51:53","date_gmt":"2025-03-12T13:51:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/defensehere.com\/?p=148112"},"modified":"2025-03-12T16:51:53","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T13:51:53","slug":"spain-vows-to-reach-2-defense-spending","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/defensehere.com\/en\/spain-vows-to-reach-2-defense-spending\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain vows to reach 2% defense spending target"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><a href=\"http:\/\/defensehere.com\/en\/tag\/spain\/\">Spain<\/a> will fulfill its commitment to spend 2% of its total GDP on defense, the country\u2019s prime minister said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u201cI promise that we are ready to comply; we will do it,\u201d Pedro Sanchez said at a news conference alongside his Finnish counterpart Petteri Orpo in Helsinki.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">His comments come as the Spanish government\u2019s left-wing backers pledge to block military spending increases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">On Tuesday, Sanchez met with the leader of his left-wing coalition partner, Yolanda Diaz, assuring that any increase in defense spending will not come at the expense of social programs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">From Helsinki, Sanchez also argued that the <a href=\"https:\/\/european-union.europa.eu\/index_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU<\/a> should subsidize defense spending, as European security is a \u201ccommon good\u201d that requires \u201ccommon resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u201cMaybe there are Finnish people saying, \u2018Oh, someeone comes from the South and they want subsidies,\u2019 but I\u2019m not asking for subsidies for countries in the south of Europe. My proposal is that these subsidies go to countries that are closer to the Russian border,\u201d Sanchez said. \u201cThey need to feel the solidarity of the EU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Finland accounts for around half of the EU\u2019s border with Russia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">Sanchez also called the Ukraine-US ceasefire proposal \u201cpositive news\u201d but stressed the need for the EU to take part in peace negotiations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">\u201cThis is an existential issue for Europe.
