French defense company Thales claims their new radar GM400α has the longest range in the market and extremely high levels of mobility.
Kenny Baxter, Asia Regional Sales Director at Thales said in an interview with DefenseHere “The instrumented range of the radar is over 500 kilometers. It's extremely compact at the same time, which is quite unique, which means it can be easily moved or can even be operated from a vehicle.”
Baxter stated “It's extremely modern as a software defined radar. So, Thales can continually add new capabilities and new features to enhance the performance via software.”
“So it's a high commonality with the existing GM400 radars around the world. But the latest version, the Alpha has even more detection range and more capability to detect small targets, slow moving targets like drones, for example. And it has the ability to deal with difficult targets and cluttered environment, for example, low flying targets where there is a lot of background clutter they can interfere with detection of the target.”
“In the global markets, it is the most successful long range radar in the world in terms of export. We've exported over 100 or we've sold over 100 of these radars to over 20 countries worldwide and specifically in Southeast Asia.
Indonesia has recently ordered 13 of these radars. And it's also in service in Bangladesh and in Malaysia.”
In December 2023, Malaysian Air Force finalized a contract with Thales to acquire a GM400α radar. Previously, an Indonesian defense company has ordered 13 GM400α radars in mid-2023 to bolster Indonesia's aerial surveillance.
