NATO signed a 1.2 billion dollar contract for 155mm artillery rounds to increase the defense capability of the alliance and support Ukraine.
“The war in Ukraine has become a battle of ammunition” said NATO Secretary-General Stoltenberg, reminding that since July 2023, NATO signed agreements amounting to more than 10 billion dollars for guided anti-tank missiles and ammunition for artillery and tanks.
Announcing the contract for the supply of hundreds of thousands of 155mm artillery rounds to increase the defensive capability of the alliance, Stoltenberg stated that this agreement will help cover Ukraine’s ammunition needs.
“No threat to NATO countries”
Stoltenberg proclaimed the continued readiness of NATO and the alliances increased presence in its eastern flank to prevent potential attacks but emphasized that NATO allies are under no immediate or future threat.
As an example of NATO’s efforts, Stoltenberg pointed to the “Steadfast Defender 2024” which will be one of the largest NATO military exercises in recent decades with more than 90 thousand soldiers participating from 31 NATO countries and Sweden. The exercise will begin in February and run through May.
“The exercise shows the resolve of allies to protect each other” said Stoltenberg, adding that the exercise is to “clear any misunderstandings or miscalculations in Moscow regarding NATO’s readiness to defend every inch of land in NATO countries and to be sure the alliance possesses the required strength and readiness which will ensure there will be no attack on NATO.”
NATO’s General Manager of Support and Procurement Agency Stacy Cummings stated that the expected delivery time of the artillery shells ordered under contract is between 24 or 36 months.
