Sweden has signed a seven-year framework agreement with Nammo Sweden for programmable 30 mm and 40 mm ammunition, as the country moves to strengthen its ability to counter drones and other aerial threats, the Norwegian defence company said.
The agreement includes an initial order for Nammo’s 30mm x 113 PABEX and 40mm L/70 PABEX programmable airburst rounds.
Nammo said the ammunition will be used primarily with Sweden’s Trackfire and TRIDON Mk2 air defence systems. The 40mm round will also be compatible with existing CV90 armoured vehicles equipped with 40 mm guns.
The PABEX rounds are designed to engage a range of targets, including unmanned aircraft, missiles, helicopters and ground targets. Programmable airburst ammunition can be set to detonate at a selected point in flight, allowing the projectile’s effects to be concentrated around an airborne target.
The agreement comes as European militaries expand short-range air defence and counter-drone capabilities in response to the growing use of unmanned systems on the battlefield.
For Sweden, the ammunition will add a programmable airburst capability to existing gun-based air defence systems without requiring a new platform for the 40mm-equipped CV90 fleet.
Nammo did not disclose the value of the framework agreement or the size of the initial order.
The company said the agreement is part of Sweden’s broader effort to strengthen national air defence and counter-unmanned aircraft capabilities.
