Koç Information and Defense Technologies Inc. (KoçSavunma), Türkiye’s only underwater telephone manufacturer, has developed the UWaT Digital Underwater Telephone in partnership with TÜBİTAK.
The system was unveiled for the first time at the SAHA 2024 International Defense, Aerospace, and Space Industry Exhibition held in Istanbul in October 2024.
The UWaT Digital Underwater Telephone, set to be used on Türkiye’s national warship projects MILGEM 6–8 corvettes, is expected to soon be included in the Turkish Naval Forces Command’s inventory.
Developed by KoçSavunma, the UWaT Digital Underwater Telephone enables continuous analog and digital communication between submarines and surface ships using underwater acoustic waves.
Thanks to its capability for SMS-like digital data transfer underwater, the system allows friendly ships and submarines to be identified quickly and securely during naval operations, enhancing operational efficiency.
The technical features of the UWaT Digital Underwater Telephone include telephone and telegraph communications in compliance with STANAG-1074 and STANAG-1382 standards, digital data communication (compatible with STANAG 4748 – JANUS standard), detection of sonar beacon (pinger) signals, and sonar silencing capabilities. The system is also equipped with emergency channel monitoring, voice recording, and listening features, making it highly effective in field operations.
With its software-based modular structure, the UWaT Digital Underwater Telephone offers rapid updates and maintenance capabilities in the field. Its user-friendly multilingual interface and ability to transfer data to external storage units further enhance the user experience.
The system can meet different operational needs with three adjustable transmission power levels and options for unidirectional and omnidirectional transmission. It also includes built-in test functions to ensure constant operational readiness.
