Israel’s Elbit Systems debuts advanced Roem artillery system

Israel has unveiled its newest artillery system, Roem, representing a major leap forward in modernizing its military.

Designed by Elbit Systems, this cutting-edge weapon successfully completed its initial operational firing in June and is scheduled to be integrated into an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) unit within the next year.

Roem system signifies a fundamental change in artillery technology for the IDF. In contrast to the conventional tracked M109 howitzer, Roem employs a wheeled vehicle with a substantial gun. This innovative design not only enhances mobility but also introduces advanced automation and precision to Israel's artillery capabilities.

Dubbed by the IDF as the "world's first cannon capable of automatic firing," Roem showcases remarkable technological strides. Its automation enables a significantly higher rate of fire and extends engagement capabilities beyond current systems.

The IDF emphasizes the system's capability to move autonomously and swiftly on roads while maintaining exceptional maneuverability in diverse field conditions.

Roem's automation includes tasks traditionally handled by soldiers, such as loading the cannon, marking a significant advancement that reduces crew size and enhances battlefield efficiency.

This new system can fire eight 155mm rounds per minute, effectively doubling the rate of the modern M109.

The introduction of the Roem artillery system represents a major step in Israel’s military modernization endeavors. With advanced automation, a higher firing rate, and enhanced mobility, it is poised to transform artillery operations on the battlefield.
