Indra has announced that deliveries of the first VCR 8×8 Dragón vehicles to the Spanish Army will begin soon, with 11 units expected in the coming weeks, as reported by Info Defensa. Indra’s president, Ángel Escribano, confirmed this in a recent speech to the Spanish Congress, though no specific date was provided.
Indra leads the Tess Defence consortium, which has been managing the project since 2024, alongside GDELS-SBS, EM&E Group, and Sapa Placencia. The project officially started in 2020, following a long selection and demonstration phase. Escribano emphasized the vehicle’s complexity, particularly its communication systems, which include satellite equipment and multiple radios for different operational needs.
Escribano also highlighted the successful integration of these technologies and the rigorous testing, including blast and electromagnetic tests. He pointed out that this thorough testing ensures smooth production, with units set to be delivered on a regular basis.
Secretary of State for Defence, Amparo Valcarce, noted in February that delays have pushed the delivery of the planned 92 units to 2025. The units currently undergoing testing include various versions, such as those for engineering operations.
Despite the delays, Escribano reassured that the VCR 8×8 Dragón is the most advanced platform in Europe, with the industry’s decision to proceed gradually with production ensuring long-term quality control. This strategy, he explained, avoids the risks of mass production and subsequent costly fixes, positioning the vehicle for future success in both domestic and international markets.
