Indra and Rheinmetall Electronics have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to propose an upgrade for the Spanish Leopard 2E Combat System. The planned enhancements aim to integrate advanced technologies that align with future C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence) requirements for combat platforms.
The two companies previously collaborated on the development of the Leopard 2E Combat System, which includes the Fire Control System and C4I system. With this agreement, they seek to continue cooperation in the production and servicing of these systems.
Rheinmetall Electronics, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of the Leopard 2 fire control systems, provides a standardized core system with the flexibility to implement customer-specific adaptations. The collaboration with Indra offers solutions compatible with other Leopard 2 variants, allowing operators to maintain a common system base while integrating new technological advancements over the vehicle’s lifecycle.
Indra specializes in the service and production of the Leopard 2 Combat System and develops electro-optical solutions, battle management systems (BMS ET and Lince), and mission systems (Maestre) for platforms including the Leopard 2E, Pizarro Infantry Fighting Vehicle, and VCR 8×8 wheeled armored vehicle.
Rheinmetall focuses on defense electronics and software, with a modular and open architecture incorporating automated operations, seamless integration of weapon systems, network connectivity, and options for manned and unmanned operations.
The agreement comes as Spain and other NATO and EU member states increase defense budgets to enhance the operational readiness of their combat vehicle fleets.
