Germany has rolled out a significant new military aid package aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s defense capabilities amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia. The latest delivery includes a mix of advanced weaponry and military technology, including 15 Leopard 1A5 tanks, one short-range and one medium-range IRIS-T air defense system with accompanying missiles, two Patriot air defense launchers, 68 drones, and various other military equipment.
This new aid package comes as part of Germany’s continued support since 2022. To date, Berlin has provided Ukraine with materials worth around €5.2 billion ($5.7 billion) sourced from the stocks of the German Federal Armed Forces.
In addition to hardware, Germany has also contributed significantly to Ukraine’s military training efforts, with over 10,000 Ukrainian soldiers having undergone training in Germany. These training efforts have cost an estimated €282 million ($308 million).
Leopard 1A5 Tanks
The Leopard 1A5 tanks, manufactured by the German company KNDS, are designed for high-precision combat in various conditions, including limited visibility and while in motion. These tanks are capable of rapid firing, precise adjustments, and quick inspections, ensuring that they remain combat-ready without the need for external testing tools.
Together with Denmark, Germany has now provided Ukraine with a total of 103 Leopard 1A5 tanks, including the recent delivery of 15 tanks.
IRIS-T Air Defense System
Germany is also supplying Ukraine with advanced air defense systems. The IRIS-T systems, which were first delivered to Ukraine in September, include truck-mounted launchers that can intercept aerial threats at ranges of up to 40 kilometers (25 miles).
Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the importance of these systems, stating, “In Ukraine, IRIS-T has successfully intercepted more than 250 rockets, drones, and cruise missiles, saving countless lives in the process.”
