Fincantieri begins work on first “FREMM EVO” frigate for Italian Navy

The steel-cutting ceremony for the first of two “FREMM EVO” frigates for the Italian Navy was held today at Fincantieri’s Riva Trigoso shipyard in Genoa. The event was attended by key figures from the Naval Armaments Directorate (NAVARM), Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, and Fincantieri’s Naval Vessels Division.

In July 2024, the contract for the construction of the two “FREMM EVO” units was signed by Orizzonte Sistemi Navali (OSN), a joint venture between Fincantieri (51%) and Leonardo (49%), in collaboration with OCCAR (Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement). The new frigates are part of the ongoing “FREMM” program, which aims to renew the Italian Navy’s fleet by developing next-generation naval ships. The first unit is scheduled for delivery in 2029, with the second to follow in 2030.

The “FREMM EVO” frigates will feature advanced technology and performance, building on previous developments made under Italy’s Defence Act and the Mid Life Upgrade program for the Horizon-class destroyers. These vessels are designed to ensure high operational capabilities, incorporating the latest anti-drone technology and the ability to manage unmanned systems across three operational domains—surface, sea, and subsurface.

Key upgrades include a cyber-resilient Ship Management System, improved air-conditioning and electrical distribution, and eco-friendly modifications for the platform. Additionally, the Combat System will receive significant enhancements, such as the SADOC 4 Cyber-resilient Combat Management System, dual-band radar sensors for TBM defense, and advanced sonar and communication systems. These updates aim to improve interoperability and operational efficiency across multiple defense scenarios.

The “FREMM EVO” frigates will also be equipped with reliable maintenance plans, ensuring that the vessels remain fully operational and ready for deployment.

Fincantieri, a major player in the global shipbuilding industry, continues to lead in various maritime sectors, including the construction and transformation of naval vessels, offshore platforms, and marine systems.
