EU mobilises €910 million to strengthen defense and close capability gaps

The European Commission announced that it is mobilising €910 million to support defense research and development under the 2024 work program of the European Defence Fund (EDF).

The funding will support 54 calls for proposals across areas such as air and missile defense, ground-based precision systems, electronic warfare, and defence innovation.

For the first time, calls will address defence medical response and underwater warfare.

Two flagships will be launched to support the development of next-generation air combat and armoured platforms.

In parallel, the Commission adopted the second EU Defence Innovation Scheme (EUDIS) work program, with a budget of €225 million to support defence start-ups, SMEs, and mid-caps.
