Brazilian Navy launches second Riachuelo-class submarine named S41 Humaita

According to a tweet published by the Brazilian Navy on December 11, 2020, the second Brazilian Navy Riachuelo-class submarine named "Humaitá”, manufactured in Brazil based on the French Scorpene-class design submarine was launched on December 11, 2020, during an official ceremony attended by the Brazilian President.

In 2009, Brazil purchased four enlarged French-made Scorpene-class submarines for US$9.9 billion with a technology transfer agreement and a second agreement to develop a French/Brazilian nuclear-powered submarine. The submarines are being built by a joint venture company set up by Naval Group and Odebrecht of Brazil. They are designated S40 Riachuelo, S41 Humaita, S42 Tonelero, and S43 Ango Stura. The contract also included the support for the construction of a naval base and a shipyard in Brazil. The Prosub program is a key extension of the strategic defence cooperation agreement signed in December 2008 in Rio de Janeiro.

On November 30, 2020, Navy Recognition has published news to announce immersion tests with the Riachuelo (S40), the first Brazilian-made submarine, which is based on the Fench Scorpene-class submarine design. The Brazilian submarine is larger in length, tonnage and cargo capacity compared to the original French project. The Brazilian version is 75 m (246 ft) and a displacement of 2,000 tons, compared to the original Scorpene which has a lenght of 61.7 m (202 ft) and a displacement of 1,565 tons.

The Brazilian submarine class was given the designation Riachuelo class. It is a diesel-electric powered attack submarine including four MTU 12V 396 SE84 diesel engines and one Jeumont-Schneider EPM Magtronic electric engine. The submarine can reach a speed of 21 knots (39 km/h; 24 mph) with a range of 6,000 nmi (11,000 km; 6,900 mi) at 8 kn (15 km/h; 9.2 mph) surfaced and 550 nmi (1,020 km; 630 mi) at 4 kn (7.4 km/h; 4.6 mph) submerged.

The Riachuelo class can reach a maximum depth of 400 and has a crew of 32 sailors. The submarine is armed with six 533 mm (21 in) torpedo tubes able to launch F21 heavy torpedoes, SM-39 Exocet & MANSUP anti-ship missiles or naval mines.
