Another Russian military general has been killed in fighting near Ukraine’s northeastern Kharkiv city, the Ukrainian intelligence claimed on Tuesday.
According to a statement by the Intelligence Directorate of Ukraine Defense Ministry, Maj. Gen. Vitaly Gerasimov, chief of staff and deputy commander of the 41st Army of Russia, was killed.
The statement said that Gerasimov had taken part in the second Chechen War, Russia’s operations in Syria and the annexation of Crimea.
Last week, Maj. Gen. Andrei Sukhovetsky, a deputy commander of the 41st Army, was reported to have been killed.
Russia's war on Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24, has drawn international condemnation, led to financial sanctions on Moscow, and spurred an exodus of global firms from Russia. The West has also imposed biting export restrictions on key technologies that are now prohibited from being sent to Russia.
At least 406 civilians have been killed and 801 others injured in Ukraine since the beginning of the war, according to the UN, while also cautioning that conditions on the ground make it difficult to verify the true number.
Some 2 million people have also fled to neighboring countries, the UN refugee agency said.
