SAAB's Gripen E makes a powerful debut at CRUZEX 2024

SAAB's F-39E Gripen, nearly two years into active service with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB), has delivered a stellar performance at CRUZEX 2024, its first participation in a multinational exercise. The advanced fighter not only met but exceeded expectations, confirming its position as a cutting-edge weapon system and a key component of FAB’s operational capabilities.

During the exercise, the Gripen E demonstrated remarkable operational availability and reliability. According to Lieutenant Colonel Ramon Lincoln Santos Fórneas, commander of the 1st Air Defence Group (1º GDA), all seven aircraft deployed for the exercise were consistently available for daily missions. "Expectations were surpassed, especially regarding availability. We brought seven aircraft as planned and almost every day we had all seven fighters available on the flight line," Fórneas said.

The F-39E played versatile roles in the Composite Air Operations (COMAO), engaging as both an Allied and an Opposing Force. Each morning, four Gripens participated in COMAO missions, while two additional fighters joined smaller-scale missions in the afternoon.

Unmatched Performance and Integration

The Gripen E’s performance during CRUZEX 2024 underscored its technological prowess and seamless integration capabilities. The fighter’s Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar, Infra-Red Search and Track (IRST) targeting sensor, and electronic warfare systems performed exceptionally. These advanced systems allowed for precise threat detection and simulated missile launches with impressive results.

Lieutenant Colonel Fórneas highlighted the smooth collaboration between the F-39E and other aircraft in the formation. “The electronic warfare system, the threat detection, the AESA radar, and the IRST worked perfectly. We were able to simulate missile launches with excellent results,” he noted.

During the COMAO missions, Gripens ensured air superiority while protecting transport and attack aircraft formations. With dozens of aircraft sharing the airspace, the F-39E proved its capabilities in complex, high-intensity scenarios, demonstrating why it is a valuable asset in FAB’s fleet.

CRUZEX 2024 marked a significant milestone for the F-39E Gripen, solidifying its role as a modern and reliable platform ready for the challenges of contemporary air combat.
