Britain receives last batch of Archer howitzers from Sweden

The British Army has received the last batch of 10 Archer wheeled artillery systems from Sweden, fulfilling its total order of 14.

BAE Bofors, a BAE Systems company, and General Dynamics have enhanced the howitzers to align with the UK’s operational needs.

These additions are crucial in addressing the capability void resulting from the deployment of 32 AS90 self-propelled guns to Ukraine.

The 1 Deep Recce Strike Brigade, after a comprehensive 14-week training session in Sweden, will be responsible for operating the Archers.

British Army official Colonel Stu Nassé said this acceptance “marks the completion of the initial acquisition of the 14 Archers and is a significant milestone.”

“Archer is an exciting project to be a part of and will deliver a world-class capability in record time,” he said.

The Archer howitzer, manufactured in Sweden, is recognized for its capability to rapidly fire and relocate before the enemy can respond.

Equipped with a 155-millimeter gun, it can effectively target objectives up to 50 kilometers (31 miles) away when utilizing Excalibur guided, extended-range artillery projectiles.

All operations including loading, aiming, and firing can be conducted internally, providing enhanced protection for its crew of three.
